In the vibrant community of Melton, a powerful movement is making waves, bringing young women together to share stories, tackle challenges, and create change. GirlChat, founded in 2019, is a testament to the transformative power of open dialogue and collective action. With the slogan, "Changing the world one conversation at a time!", GirlChat is a shining example of how grassroots initiatives can drive meaningful change.

From Humble Beginnings to a Thriving Initiative

GirlChat began as a small gathering of high school graduates at the Melton Library. Co-founder Sarah Manyok and her friends initially met to discuss their shared experiences as they transitioned to university. Recognising the need for a safe and supportive space for young women – especially those from multicultural backgrounds - these young women expanded GirlChat into a platform for empowerment.

Today, GirlChat is an established organisation running monthly sessions, workshops, and events. It offers a haven where young women can discuss topics such as mental health, racism, and intergenerational relationships, helping participants build confidence and foster leadership skills.

Addressing the Needs of Diverse Women

At its core, GirlChat aims to address pressing challenges faced by young women from migrant and refugee backgrounds. From combating isolation and discrimination to navigating cultural expectations, the organisation provides a space for honest discussions.

“Our monthly sessions are about more than just conversations,” shares project officer Aliet Agany. “They’re about connection, empowerment, and tackling real issues head-on.”

Programs like “Sista Sista,” developed in partnership with the African Youth Alliance, extend GirlChat’s reach beyond Melton, connecting women across Melbourne. By creating accessible and inclusive events, GirlChat ensures that no voice goes unheard.

Empowering Leadership, Building Legacy

One of GirlChat’s standout features is its commitment to nurturing leadership among participants. Young women are encouraged to take active roles in organising events and facilitating discussions, building confidence and skills that prepare them to lead in their communities.

“GirlChat is about creating opportunities,” says project coordinator Abak Dhieu. “We want young women to feel empowered, to step into leadership roles, and to know their voices matter.”

The organisation’s impact is profound. Participants frequently describe GirlChat as a transformative experience, helping them find their voices and build lasting connections.

A Vision for the Future

As GirlChat continues to grow, its focus remains on creating a safe, supportive, and inspiring environment for young women. Guided by its slogan, "Changing the world one conversation at a time!", the organisation is determined to address societal issues, spark dialogue, and leave a lasting legacy.

When asked what advice she’d give to young women looking to create change, Sarah Manyok shared: “Just start. Surround yourself with like-minded people, and never underestimate the power of small beginnings. Change begins with a single conversation.”

Through its unwavering dedication, GirlChat is proving that meaningful change doesn’t always come from grand gestures—it starts with voices raised, stories shared, and lives united in purpose.
