Residents of the City of Melton can now find great deals on pre-loved goods at the new and improved Resale Shop on Ferris Road. The shop sits within the newly upgraded Melton Recycling Facility, which also includes a modern Front End Resource Recovery centre.

The new Front End Resource Recovery centre next door also allows Melton residents to conveniently drop off a wide range of recyclable materials, including paint, batteries, engine oil, cardboard, and more, all free of charge. This initiative will dramatically reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill, contributing to a more sustainable future while also providing a significant financial saving for the community.

The facility is part of a $13 million project, with $10 million funded by the City of Melton and the remaining $3 million from the Victorian Government's Growing Suburbs Fund, along with an additional $100,000 from Sustainability Victoria. It promises to significantly reduce waste sent to landfill while offering cost-effective, eco-friendly solutions for residents.

"It’s going to reduce the amount of waste diverted to landfill, save money for our residents, and reduce environmental impacts"

City of Melton Mayor, Cr. Steve Abboushi, expressed his enthusiasm about the new facility, highlighting its importance to the growing local community. "This project has incorporated best practice resource recovery principles and will create local jobs for local people," Mr Abboushi said. "It’s going to reduce the amount of waste diverted to landfill, save money for our residents, and reduce environmental impacts."

The Resale Shop is stocked with a variety of donated items, such as toys, books, vinyl records, gardening tools, kitchenware, sporting equipment, paintings, and much more. It's a perfect spot for residents to find a bargain while contributing to a greater social cause.

The facility is operated on behalf of Melton City Council by Outlook Australia, a charity and social enterprise, including the Resale Shop, recycling centre, and transfer station.

Approximately 70% of Outlook's staff working in the resource recovery sector are from groups facing barriers to employment, such as people with disabilities, people experiencing long-term unemployment, refugees, and Indigenous workers. With over 40 sites across Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland, the organisation is making a positive impact on both sustainability and employment across the country. Profits from this Resale Shop are therefore reinvested into Outlook Australia's programs, creating jobs and opportunities for career development in the community, including residents of Melton and its surrounding suburbs.

A variety of second-hand goods can be found at the Resale Shop, including furniture, toys, and books.

"When resources are reused or repurposed, communities contribute to sustainability efforts, ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment for future generations."

The redevelopment of the Melton Recycling Facility is a prime example of how community-focused initiatives can drive both environmental and social change. By investing in sustainable infrastructure and providing resources for local residents, the City of Melton is paving the way for a greener and more inclusive future.

As Mr Abboushi put it, "When resources are reused or repurposed, communities contribute to sustainability efforts, ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment for future generations."
